Cataract treatment and presbyopia correction can be done at the same time.

Presbyopia is the decline in focusing ability as the lens's accommodation decreases with age, so nearby objects in particular become hard to see.

Presbyopia typically begins around the mid-40s. Near reading such as books or newspapers becomes harder, the distance from the eyes gradually increases, and reading in dim light becomes difficult. Straining to see a focus that is growing fainter tires the eyes, and over time reading glasses become necessary.

When cataract is also present, lens elasticity falls further and presbyopia symptoms become more severe.

In people with myopia the near point is originally short, so it takes longer to reach the 40 cm near point used to define presbyopia, and presbyopia comes relatively late. Once it does come, reading glasses are needed and adapting to them is very difficult. In people with hyperopia the near point is originally farther, so presbyopia comes earlier and reading glasses are worn at a relatively younger age.

When presbyopia is present in this way, an intraocular lens suited to presbyopia can be implanted at cataract surgery to correct presbyopia.

With advances in materials engineering and ophthalmic optics, presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses have been developed and are used worldwide.

In standard cataract surgery a monofocal intraocular lens is used and focused for distance, so reading glasses are required for near vision.

With scientific advances, multifocal intraocular lenses that can focus at both near and distance have been developed, so near-vision decline after cataract surgery can be addressed.

This is also seen in Alcon® PanOptix® intraocular lens receiving the Medical Technology product award at the Prix Galien in the United States, often regarded as a Nobel-level honor in medical-device and pharmaceutical research and development, which reconfirms its safety.

PanOptix™ was Recognised with Prestigious Prix Galien Award for “Best Medical Technology”

Multifocal intraocular lens (distance and near both corrected)

An intraocular lens made so that both distance and near can be brought into focus.

It also improves distance as well as near vision, so it is an intraocular lens that is effective for presbyopia when glasses or reading glasses are hard to wear or unwanted, or when focusing at near for reading is difficult.
